YouTube Madness

November 13, 2007

Since I got broadband, I’ve been enjoying YouTube a lot more. Possibly because I no longer have to wait for twenty minutes while a video downloads. Anyway, I’ve been working on a horribly serious (but surprisingly upbeat) post about relationships and loneliness, which is taking a while to make sense. So, in the meantime, I thought I’d post this great video I found.

The band’s called Rasputina, who play what may be best described as gothic cello rock. The song is The New Zero, from the album How We Quit The Forest. They’re kind of an obscure band for an English guy to have heard of, but one of my American exes was into them and gave me the album as a present, years ago. The video is a fan-made effort, but it looks great. So here it is:

It’s The Black Cat from 1934, starring Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff.

    Reminds me of DeVotchKa

Just you know less maudlin, with a stronger more throbbing beat and a female singer etc

Thank you. 1934, amazing. I’ve just bought it from Amazon – my husband and daughters will love it (shiver).

GREAT!! Now I can use your blog as a repository for all my thousands of YouTube links… like this one where Mark Twain uses Satan to teach kids lessons about life… IN CLAYMATION. Totally Awesome.

Or this one which offers important insights into Canadian culture…

That Mark Twain/Satan clip is fucking awesome.

As to the Canadian beer commericial, I’d respond with one for a British beer, but every British beer that has enough resources to advertise with amusing TV spots is awful. So I’m going to betray my roots with this:

Bavarian maids and a great theme tune. What more could you ask for?

After reading your post I felt like rummaging around youtube and right on the front page I came across this amazing song with an equally amazing video:

I think it perfectly conveys the feeling of a crazed walking on air day. Sometimes I have periods of such days, I feel like one of them might be coming up at the moment.
It’s also kind of sad, though, this caricature of someone relying entirely on psychiatric medication to get along in daily life (reminds me of my life).

Hi, I'm James. I'm a 26 year old guy from England with bipolar disorder (currently well controlled). I also have a circadian rhythm sleep disorder (not so well controlled). This blog has charted my journey from mental illness, through diagnosis and, recently, into recovery. It's not always easy, but then, what is?

As of 12th September 2008 it has been forty five weeks since I quit smoking. So in another seven weeks it'll have been a whole year.
