Woodlice on the curtains

I’ve been dealing with an influx of unwelcome visitors. Not of the small, furry and deeply annoying rodent kind (which is nice), but of the small, shiny and deeply puzzling kind. I think I saw the first one a couple of months ago and have been seeing them every so often since. The only place that I do see them is on my curtains. One or two have made it as far as the sofa, which is right next to the curtains.

My most recent enemy: Oniscus Asellus. The common woodlouse.

They tend to show up most often after rain. So what I think’s happening is that there’s probably some in the gutters. When it rains, conditions get too damp for them so they wander off in search of less moist conditions. Some stumble through my window and wander around on my curtains. I’m not too worried about them. They don’t destroy stuff and they don’t spread disease. It’s just somewhat disturbing to find one staring at you from the curtains.

i never knew these were called woodlice… we’ve called them roly polys and potato bugs.

the only time i’ve ever seen them in my house is when i carried them in on plant pots.

I know them as roly polys as well, it is better than wood louse, which sounds so…. disturbing. It makes me want to disinfect something.

But roly polys are something you play with. In any case, I am covered in spiders in my new home. They are everywhere. I have taken to killing them with a hammer.

At least the spiders in your new place are smaller than the ones in your old one, though, right?

Hi, I'm James. I'm a 26 year old guy from England with bipolar disorder (currently well controlled). I also have a circadian rhythm sleep disorder (not so well controlled). This blog has charted my journey from mental illness, through diagnosis and, recently, into recovery. It's not always easy, but then, what is?

Self-righteous note about smoking

As of 12th September 2008 it has been forty five weeks since I quit smoking. So in another seven weeks it'll have been a whole year.
